Controversial Dramas Spark ‘Love Jihad’ Fears Among Bangladesh’s Hindu Minority By Culture Desk | BanglaConnection Dateline: Dhaka, Sept 7, 2025

A growing number of online dramas in Bangladesh are drawing criticism for allegedly promoting interfaith relationships with underlying religious motives. Titles such as “The Imam’s Hindu Wife”, “Hindu Wife in a Muslim Home”, and “Quran Recitation in a Hindu Home” have sparked concern among Hindu minority communities, who fear these portrayals normalize what they describe as “Love Jihad.”

These dramas often depict Hindu girls marrying Muslim men and living happily in Muslim households. Critics argue that such portrayals ignore the real-life consequences many women face in interfaith marriages, including domestic violence, abandonment, and social isolation.

“Art should reflect reality, not mask it,” said a Dhaka-based social worker who works with interfaith survivors.

Social media comment sections under these dramas have revealed troubling trends, with some viewers posting aggressive remarks about targeting Hindu girls for marriage. Human rights advocates warn that such content may fuel extremist attitudes among impressionable youth.

While freedom of expression remains vital, cultural watchdogs are urging platforms to exercise editorial responsibility and ensure that fictional narratives do not incite fear or reinforce harmful stereotypes.
